Double-coated dogs do not need clipping, they need the dead undercoat out. We bathe, condition and force dry to blow the loose coat free, then work through the whole dog with a rake and a slicker until the comb runs clean from skin to tip. Expect a bin bag of coat and a dog that feels several sizes lighter. Booked four times a year, this is the single thing that makes living with a shepherd or a husky in Canberra manageable, and it beats clipping a double coat, which we will not do.
